CNGA1 and 3 belong to the cyclic nucleotide-gated channel family (CNG). They produce the primary electrical signal in photoreceptors upon absorption of a photon. These channels also generate the electrical signal in olfactory receptors, and are expressed in several other sensory and nonsensory tissues. They are voltage dependent, non-selective cation channels that are activated by direct binding of cyclic nucleotides (3-5).
