TIGAR is a probable fructose-biphosphatase that lowers cellular levels of fructose 2,6-bisphosphate, thus blocking glycolysis and directing the pathway into the pentose phosphate shunt. TIGAR protects cells against reactive oxygen species. It is rapidly up-regulated by p53, and protects against p53-induced apoptosis. TIGAR is phosphorylated upon DNA damage, probably by ATM or ATR.
