Natriuretic peptides comprise a family of 3 structurally related molecules: atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), and C-type natriuretic peptide, CNP, encoded by a gene symbolized NPPC. C-type natriuretic peptide is produced in the hypothalamus, anterior pituitary, and most major endocrine glands. C-type natriuretic peptide has potent venodilatory and coronary vasodilatory effects, but minimal effects on renal function.
