促腎上腺皮質激素(ACTH)是由腦垂體前葉分泌的多肽激素，作用于腎上腺皮質刺激腎上腺類固醇、醛固酮、皮質醇和腎上腺雄激素的合成和分泌，也是男子重要的糖皮質激素皮質醇的主要的調節者。ACTH是下丘腦-腦垂體-腎上腺軸的重要組成部分，通常是在生物應激反應中產生的。當血中的皮質醇水平增高，腦垂體釋放的促腎上腺皮質激素被抑制，相反，腦垂體釋放的促腎上腺皮質激素的水平則提高。促腎上腺皮質激素在每天清晨(6:00-8:00)達到峰值，到零時降到最低狀態。
